Spring Rain
We were tasked to design a fence, a staircase, a green wall and a portico within the general restructuring of the Qianhai Harbour School. Rather than designing these elements as isolated objects we decided to integrate them within an overall structure made of a limited set of steel profiles and perforated metal sheets.
This project became the opportunity to illustrate a design method that underlies all our projects and which consists in the relentless use of a uniform bay system. This design method relies on the simplest geometric forms such as the square and the circle. These ‘fatherless’ forms are not composed but rather juxtaposed in a paratactic way like in a Robert Lax’s poem. Differences, accidents, changes to this system are not decided but forced by the given program or context. In this way an idea of architecture is achieved where uniformity and variation, abstraction and context, generic and specific, rigid and adaptable, are no longer antithetical but complementary architectural effects.
